WHO IS THE FIRST AND THE LAST?
How often have we heard those Greek letters - Alpha and Omega? We have learned that they are the first and last letters of the greek alphabet and that they also indicate the beginning and the end. In the book of Revelations there are four scriptures where Yeshua refers to Himself as the First and the Last - the Eternal One.
Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Rev. 1:11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.
Rev.21:6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
Rev.22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
There is another perspective here that we frequently miss because we don’t consider who is speaking, nor how they are speaking. Yeshua/Jesus is speaking to John the apostle. Were they speaking in the Greek language? Most assume so because after all the new testament is written in greek - right? Both Yeshua and John are of Hebrew descent - they are citizens of the hebrew/jewish nation. It is much more likely the spoke hebrew/aramaic. When we consider the preceding verses from a Hebrew perspective we can see a much bigger picture.
The aleph-tav is from Strong’s H226- aleph א (the first hebrew letter) = the ox head, is a sign of strength, power, leader. tav ת (the last hebrew letter) = crossed sticks is a mark, cross, sign, covenant. The Alef–Tav (את) symbol is a two‑letter Hebrew construct made of Aleph (א), the first letter, and Tav (ת), the last letter—and is often interpreted symbolically as a “from beginning to end” sign. alephtavproject.com
Some interpreters see symbolic meaning in these letters:
Alef - first letter of the alphabet; ancient pictograph: ox head, symbolizing strength, leadership, and God’s oneness. This letter represents the ineffable nature of God.
Tav - last letter of the alphabet; ancient pictograph: a cross‑shaped mark or X, symbolizing a sign, covenant, or completion. In Ezekiel 9:4, the “mark” placed on the righteous is literally tav. learnhebrewforchristians.com
The Alef-Tav spans the Hebrew alphabet from first to last, often interpreted as a symbol of totality, completeness, or divine signature.
The Hebrew equivalent of ‘I am the Alpha and Omega” would be “I am the Aleph and the Tav.” alephtavproject.com
Summary -the Alef–Tav symbol (את) is grammatically a direct‑object marker in Hebrew, but its position as the first and last letters of the alphabet has led many interpreters to see it as a symbol of completeness, covenant, divine signature, or Messianic identity.
Our Messiah/Savior refers to Himself as the Alef/Tav. He is telling us who He is!
He is the Strength of the Cross!!
He is the Power of the Covenant!!!
He is the One who Leads us to Completion!!!!
He is the AlefTav את
